Indigenous Student Mobility Programme at Otago

27 June – 8 July 2016, Otago

The first edition of the new, collaboratively developed, Matariki Indigenous Student Mobility Programme was held at Otago in 2016.  The programme involved two weeks of intensive academic study, with pre-course reading provided beforehand.  The syllabus was developed in consultation with local indigenous experts and scholars and looked at themes and geo-political influences that impact on the social, cultural and economic development of local indigenous communities.  The schedule included classroom teaching in the mornings and site visits during the afternoons.  The programme encouraged students to think critically about what it means to be indigenous and about how particular issues may be addressed in their respective home countries.
