Matariki 3MT® competition 2019 – And the winner is…
The Matariki Network’s inaugural 3 Minute Thesis competition is now complete! A judging panel of academics from across the network scored each of the 15 video presentations put forward by Dartmouth, Durham, Otago, Queen’s and UWA to decide the overall winner. The judges agreed that all of the presentations were of an extremely high standard and they had a very hard time choosing their favourite! First prize (£1,000 cash) was ultimately awarded to Katarina Doughty of UWA, for her presentation entitled: “Reducing global food waste through insect farming”.
Second place (£250 cash) went to Humanities student Nevena Martinovic of Queen’s University, for her presentation: “Acting your age – Gender & age on the 18th century stage”.
The public also had a chance to have their say in the People’s Choice award (£500 cash), which received a over 1,700 votes! The favourite here was Cassie Stylianou of Otago, with her presentation “Unravelling the genetic variants underlying inherited endometrial cancer risk”.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic research communication competition developed in 2008 by The University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia. It supports students’ capacity to effectively explain their academic research in just three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The 3MT® contest is now successfully held in over 600 universities across more than 65 countries worldwide.
